Omnibus I: Biblical and Classical Civilizations
What exactly does Omnibus mean? Omnibus is a Latin term meaning "all encompassing." Our purpose is to have students grow in their appreciation of the unity of all knowledge. In the past many understood that theology is the queen of the sciences. Acts 17:28 says "…in Him we live and move and have our being." Educators in the past were far less likely to divide disciplines into 50-minute time slots. This relatively modern phenomenon has proven quite destructive in getting students to think in a unified and comprehensive way. The Omnibus is our attempt to change that. We want your students to recognize the culture and worldview that affected a fiction writer. Students should understand connections between, say, architecture and beliefs about God. We could go, on but the point is this: all disciplines are related to and under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We will understand this world, past, present and future, most effectively and thoroughly if we study it as a unified whole. Initially, we have merged the study of history, theology and literature with applicable development of skills and applications from logic and rhetoric. Such practice then provides the luxury of extended time periods for in-depth study in these fields in seamless combination. Our Omnibus program now has a curriculum to make teaching these great books of Western Civilization possible for anyone. Carefully scripted daily lesson plans, reading assignments and a host of other helps make this program doable by virtually anyone. Students can even execute the program on their own, although that is not ideal. The curriculum guide at Veritas Academy (downloadable at veritaspress.com) includes many of these books. We select books as primary reading and secondary reading for each semester. Below, find the books grouped as we use them. The primary reading covers books that the student will interact with most. Papers, tests, field trips, etc. will generally be more geared to the primary books. Secondary reading is not necessarily less important, but it is given less emphasis. Books are rated with a fairly sophisticated point system to keep the disciplines in balance-we don't want to spend all our time on history, for example, at the expense of theology or literature. Many books not included in the "semester packages" should be considered, too. We encourage you to select them based on the needs and interests of your students and the expertise of the teacher.
