Frequently Asked Questions

Self-Paced History and Bible
How many lessons are there and what is the length of time per lesson?

There are 32 events studied in each course, and each event has five lessons in the history courses and four in Bible of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. It is intended that a student will complete one event per week over a school year of 32 weeks.

How do Self-Paced Courses work? What does a typical day look like?

A typical day when doing a Self-Paced Course includes logging onto your VPSA student page, launching the lesson and completing the lesson. There is no homework for the history or Bible courses. An optional collection of historical fiction books is available which provides some excellent outside reading.

For how long can my child access the course?

The course is available to the student for twelve months from start date, which is chosen at enrollment. If needed, monthly extensions can be arranged with our office for a fee.

When does my 12-month access begin?

After you purchase your self-paced course, you will receive an email with a link to a registration form. On that form, you will indicate the student's information who will be taking the course, as well as your desired start date. The twelve-month access must be started within a year of your purchase date.

For what age are the courses intended?

The courses are designed for students in 2nd-6th grades just like the Veritas Press history and Bible programs. We’ve seen 7th and 8th graders benefit too--especially if they have not had our history or Bible program earlier. However, some students, younger and many older (including parents) have been enjoying the courses for students of all ages.

Are the courses suitable for children with learning disabilities?

Children with varying disabilities have had great success with these courses. Feel free to call us at 800-922-5082 to discuss your personal situation.

Will my child be graded on his work?

Yes. Tests and worksheets are graded, providing parents, teachers, and students with progress reports.

Can my child be enrolled in more than one course simultaneously?

Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend taking one history course and one Bible course each year.

Are the courses qualified for the Veritas Press Yearly Certification program?

Yes. Successful completion of a course will qualify for the history or Bible requirement for yearly certification.

Why are the historical fiction titles and resources optional?

The historical fiction is optional because we recognize that some may not wish to include it in their history study. It should be noted that it adds a great deal for those who do choose to include it. Other resources are not required, because the course is carefully designed to be self-contained, eliminating the need for most outside resources. However, if you love books as we do, you may want to get several anyway—they will only help reinforce the learning.

What devices can be used to do the course?

Bible courses were created using HTML5 and can be used on many different devices including PCs, Macs, iPads, and Android tablets.

History courses were created using Flash and can only be used on a desktop or a laptop computer.

Are the courses available on DVDs?

No. They are part of the Veritas Press Scholars Academy and are accessed online only. Due to the interactive nature of the courses and the large file sizes the courses must be accessed online.

Can I use the courses for multiple children?

If a parent wants each child to have recorded quiz and test grades, then a course purchase is necessary for each. If a parent is not concerned about grade reports, they can have multiple children use the same course access. The tests, worksheets and responses are kept for individual students--one per registration. However, a multi-child discount is available.

How do these courses compare to a parent teaching the course or taking the course online with a live teacher?

We believe that the self-paced courses provide the best way to learn the material. Additionally, it is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. Finally, the student can do the work whenever he wishes.

Are report cards available?

Parents can seen grades and progress of their students at any time. A report card can be printed upon completion of the course.

What are the system requirements?

Internet connection must provide a minimum download speed of 1 Mbps (megabits per second) for History courses and 2 Mbps for Bible courses. If the speed is less than this, self-paced course video will not run smoothly, and interactions will take longer to load. You can check your download speed for free at SpeedTest.net.

Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend Omnibus Primary and Secondary together.

The homework includes the books from the first and second semester book lists. The homework for Omnibus is not optional and the lessons presume knowledge of the books that were assigned to be read.

What happens if I need more than One Calendar Year to Complete the Course?

If needed, monthly extensions can be arranged with our office for a fee.

No. They are part of the Veritas Press Scholars Academy and are accessed online only. Due to the interactive nature of the courses and the shear size of the files the courses must be accessed online.

Can I use the courses for multiple children?

We don’t recommend it.

This is a different and unique experience. It is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. It is also sometimes cost-prohibitive to hire a teacher through live Veritas Press Scholars Academy courses or otherwise. An additional benefit is that the student can do the work whenever he wishes and is not tied down to when a class is scheduled. Some children simply do better in this constantly changing environment.

If Omnibus is a conversation-based course, how can a Self-Paced course achieve the same results?

The Self-Paced courses include “Knowledge Trees” within the program. These are interactions where the Self-Paced course asks the student a question and then, based on his answer, it responds with a counter question or answer. The Self-Paced course is designed to create more questions based off of what information it gets from the student, whether right or wrong. This encourages the student to think and interact with the program.

How is the Omnibus Textbook Equivalent to the Omnibus Self-Paced Lessons?

Each Self-Paced Omnibus lesson is equivalent to one session in the Omnibus textbook. There are several sessions in the textbook for each book that is read in the Omnibus class.

Are report cards available?

Parents can see grades and progress of their students at any time. A report card can be printed upon completion of the course.

What are the system requirements?

Internet connection must provide a minimum download speed of 2 Mbps (megabits per second). If the speed is less than this, self-paced course video will not run smoothly, and interactions will take longer to load. You can check your download speed for free at SpeedTest.net.
